Green ridgelines and valley farmland in Johnson County, Tennessee

About the field

A Public AirportIn the Mountains

Johnson County Airport sits 4 miles south of Mountain City, Tennessee — a public facility perfect for small and larger planes alike, ringed by ridgelines and great views.

Who we are

Small field, full service

We're a public airport, which means the ramp is open to anyone with wings. Pilots stop in for 100LL and Jet A, for hangar space, for avionics and maintenance work — and plenty just come for the view and a cup of coffee in the lounge.

You'll find modern hangars with 24/7 surveillance, a courtesy car for a run into town, camping for anyone who wants to stay a while, a flight school for first-timers, and tandem skydiving through Skydive Mountain City. FAA information is available for the field.

Why come here

"What is it that has always drawn people to Johnson County, TN? What drew the Cherokee, the early pioneers like Daniel Boone and settlers, both old and new? Johnson County is the place where the sun rises first over Tennessee. Here, you can breathe easy, slow down and drink in the beauty. The scenic splendor of the land rivals that of the Great Smoky Mountains, with adventurous trails, peaceful fishing streams, and the unsoiled beauty of Watauga Lake. Here is the 'First Light over Tennessee'."

— Dick Grayson
